Let’s Sweat: Summer Cardio Ideas

Summer is in the air, and that means it’s time to get outside and get your heart rate up with these five cardio variations. We think the following methods of movement in the sunshine will be a breath of fresh air for your cardio routine.

P.S. Don’t forget to hydrate and wear sunscreen while you’re out there!

STEP UP

Got some steps or even bleachers near you? If you do, have you tried running, jogging, or just walking up and down the stairs? It is no joke! You can do a straight up and down jogging, or even try alternating walking up the stairs, then running down them and repeating the combination in reverse. Once you get your footing, try to keep your face up and forward with only your eyes watching your feet, so you don’t strain your neck while looking down.

MAKE A SPLASH

Swimming is a full-body workout that builds coordination and strength, yet also has a huge cardiovascular element and doesn’t require a high impact on your joints. You don’t have to do just laps, try treading water at intervals or jogging in place in the shallow end of the pool.

GO ON A RIDE

Summer is a perfect time to saddle up and use the bicycle that was collecting dust all winter. Riding a bike is a no-impact method of cardio exercise, which puts hardly any stress on your joints. However, in order to turn your next biking session into a valuable cardio workout and not just a leisure ride, you’ll need to turn up the speed, as well as resistance. Make sure you wear your helmet and practice before going into busier areas with cars and pedestrians.

TAKE A HIKE

Nature is made for exercise. Rough terrain, incline of hills, mountains, and trails not only works your legs and challenges your coordination but also gets your heart rate up.

EVERYONE JUMP IN

Let’s throw it back to the schoolyard days with jump roping. Jump roping is a great form of cardio that you can do any time, anywhere! Jump roping requires coordination, power, and athleticism. We recommend that you wear supportive sneakers, grab a jump rope that fits you, and head to a local park. To jump rope with proper technique make sure the movement is coming from your wrist to rotate the rope and make sure that your elbow stays close to your body.

Lastly, enjoy the vitamin D of the sunshine and soak up the fresh air and most importantly have fun!
